What is email A/B testing?

Email A/B testing is the practice of sending two variants of an email element — such as subject line, call-to-action, offer framing or design layout — to a split audience to determine which version drives stronger engagement. Rather than relying on assumptions about what resonates with your subscribers, A/B testing gives you performance data to inform future campaign decisions.

This service is for marketing teams and email programme owners who want to optimise individual campaigns based on evidence. If you are sending regular email campaigns and want to understand what subject lines drive opens, which CTAs drive clicks, or how offer framing affects conversion, A/B testing provides the structured framework to answer those questions.

AppLabx manages the full test cycle: we develop the hypothesis, design the two variants, configure the audience split, set up the technical test parameters, monitor performance during the test window, and deliver a statistical comparison with recommendations. You receive a findings report regardless of the outcome, so every test produces learnings you can apply to future campaigns.

What you can test

Each test isolates a single variable to produce clear, actionable results.

Subject lines

Compare two subject line approaches — tone, length, personalisation, urgency or framing — to determine which drives a higher open rate for your audience.

Preview text

Test how different preview text complements or extends the subject line, and whether it impacts open rates and initial engagement.

CTA — text, colour and placement

Evaluate whether a different call-to-action wording, button colour, or position within the email affects click-through rate and downstream conversion.

Email copy and messaging

Test variations in body copy — long-form vs. short-form, feature-led vs. benefit-led, formal vs. casual tone — to understand what resonates with your subscribers.

Offer framing

Compare how different ways of presenting the same offer — percentage discount vs. dollar amount, limited-time vs. always-available — affect response rates.

Design layout

Test structural variations such as single-column vs. multi-column layout, image placement, or the balance of text and visual elements.

Send time

Determine whether sending the same email at different times of day or on different days of the week produces a measurable difference in engagement.

Personalisation approaches

Compare generic messaging against personalised versions — using first name, company name, or behaviour-based triggers — to measure the impact on engagement.

What's included

Every step from hypothesis to recommendation — managed as a single fixed-fee engagement.

US$1,500 per campaign
  • Test hypothesis development
  • Variant creation (two versions)
  • Audience split configuration
  • Test setup and technical configuration
  • Performance monitoring during test window
  • Statistical comparison and analysis
  • Findings report with recommendations

How it works

Seven steps from hypothesis to recommendation.

  1. Hypothesis

We define the test objective, identify the variable to isolate and articulate a clear hypothesis — for example, "A shorter subject line will increase open rate among this segment."

  2. Variant Creation

Our team designs two variants — Version A (control) and Version B (variant) — keeping all elements identical except the single variable under test.

  3. Audience Split

We configure an even, randomised split of your recipient list to ensure both variants receive statistically comparable sample sizes.

  4. Configuration

Technical test parameters are set in your ESP — including seed list setup, tracking parameters, send-time alignment and suppression rules.

  5. Deployment

Both variants are deployed simultaneously through your ESP. We confirm successful delivery of both versions before the test window begins.

  6. Monitoring

We monitor delivery and engagement during the test window, watching for anomalies such as deliverability issues or skewed sample allocation that could compromise results.

  7. Analysis & Recommendation

We compile a findings report comparing both variants on opens, clicks and any downstream metrics. The report includes statistical significance assessment, interpretation of results and recommendations for future campaigns.

What A/B testing is NOT

Setting clear expectations so you know exactly what this service covers.

Not multivariate testing

A/B testing compares exactly two variants — a control and one change. It does not test multiple variables simultaneously. If you need to evaluate several variables at once, that requires multivariate testing, which is a separate engagement.

Not an ongoing optimisation programme

This is a per-campaign service at US$1,500. It is not a recurring optimisation programme or retainer. If you want continuous, ongoing A/B testing across multiple campaigns, we can structure that as a separate engagement.

Not a substitute for lifecycle strategy

A/B testing optimises individual campaigns. It does not replace the need for a lifecycle email strategy, segmentation framework or automation architecture. Testing works best when layered on top of a sound email programme.

Pricing

US$1,500 per campaign
  • One A/B test per campaign (two variants)
  • Hypothesis design and variant creation
  • Audience split and technical configuration
  • Performance monitoring and analysis
  • Findings report with recommendations

Note: This is a per-campaign fee. Each additional A/B test is priced at US$1,500. A/B testing is included in the Outbound Campaign Launch bundle at no extra cost.

Frequently asked questions

How many variants does an A/B test include?

Each A/B test compares exactly two variants — Version A (control) and Version B (variant). If you need to test more than two variants at once, that falls under multivariate testing and requires a separate engagement.

What is the minimum list size for statistical significance?

Statistical significance depends on the metric being measured and the size of the difference between variants. As a general rule, we recommend a minimum of 1,000 recipients per variant (2,000 total) for reliable open-rate and click-rate results. Smaller lists can still be tested, but results should be treated as directional rather than definitive.

How long should a test run?

We typically recommend running an A/B test for 24–48 hours to capture early-engagement behaviour. Subject-line tests are often evaluated within 24 hours, while CTA and content tests may benefit from a longer window to account for delayed opens and clicks.

Can I test more than one variable at a time?

No. An A/B test isolates a single variable — such as subject line, CTA, or offer framing — to attribute performance differences to that specific change. Testing multiple variables simultaneously would make it impossible to determine which change drove the result. If you need to test multiple variables, we run them as sequential tests.

What happens if the results are inconclusive?

If the test does not reach statistical significance or the performance difference between variants is negligible, we document the findings and recommend next steps — such as retesting with a larger sample, adjusting the hypothesis, or testing a different variable. You still receive a full analysis report regardless of outcome.

Is A/B testing included in the Outbound Campaign Launch?

Yes. A/B testing is included as a standard component of the Outbound Campaign Launch bundle at no additional cost. This standalone service is for clients who want to test specific elements on an existing campaign without purchasing the full bundle.
